A : The Martin James Foundation (MJF) is a global network of charitable organisations working with a shared vision of a world in which children grow up and thrive in safe and loving families.
Through our work, we strive to bring an end to institutional care, including orphanages. We do this by strengthening families, preventing unnecessary family separation, supporting the reunification and reintegration of children with their families and communities when possible, and facilitating family-based alternative care when needed.
The Foundation is comprised of:
Key Assets - Key Assets are independent, non-profit organisations delivering children, family and community services in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. With over 30 years’ experience, they provide foster care, family strengthening, and support for people with disabilities. Their trauma-informed approach is built on strong partnerships and a commitment to meeting the unique needs of those they serve.
MJF Global - Utilises technical and financial resources generated by the Foundation to invest in partner organisations that support children and families in various countries, contributing to the global efforts in deinstitutionalising care practices.
A : Alternative care generally refers to any arrangement, informal or formal, temporary or permanent for a child without their parents. care settings without parental care, as well as actions to prevent family breakdown and separation of children as outlined in the UN Guidelines (2009).
The UN Guidelines for Alternative Care of Children state that there are two fundamental principles enshrined in the Alternative Care of Children guidelines.
“NECESSITY” – that alternative care is needed.
“SUITABILITY” – that when alternative care is required, it must be provided in a timely and appropriate manner.
